The Biofilm Toolbox network came together in Amsterdam for two days of inspiring discussion, collaboration, and creativity. Hosted in the heart of the city’s public library, the meeting brought together researchers and industry experts from across Europe to work toward one shared goal: a stronger, more connected approach to understanding and managing biofilms.
From the start, the atmosphere was dynamic and cooperative. The three Working Groups each took on a vital piece of the puzzle:
- WG1 focused on harmonizing laboratory models and identifying reproducible testing methods;
- WG2 explored how those results can inform regulation, policy, and innovation; and
- WG3 looked at how to communicate and teach biofilm science to wider audiences.
Across breakout discussions, participants mapped the pathway from lab research to real-world application, a process that depends on both rigorous methods and clear communication. The energy in the room reflected a shared ambition to make biofilm science not only excellent, but also useful and accessible. As the meeting closed, participants reflected on how much progress has been made in just one year of the Action. The conversations in Amsterdam confirmed a shared vision: to make biofilm research more coordinated, transparent, and impactful; turning knowledge into tools that benefit health, industry, and the environment.
“The Biofilm Toolbox is more than a network — it’s a community of people who believe that collaboration is the key to progress,” said Action Chair Darla Goeres during her closing remarks.
