Our Biofilm Create! Photography and Art Competition is back for 2026 – and we’re going global!
The competition forms part of our #BiofilmAware campaign, which works to raise awareness of NBIC and its research, and the many societal and economic impacts of biofilms.
This year, we’re excited to expand the competition internationally, welcoming entries from around the world and inviting our international audience to help showcase the fascinating world of biofilms. By broadening the competition’s reach, we hope to celebrate the global biofilm research community, inspire new audiences, and highlight the international collaborations that are helping to advance biofilm science.
For 2026, the Biofilm Create! competition features three categories:
- Photography
- Art
- Special Theme: Showcasing the Impact of Biofilms in Industrial Settings
Whether you’re a scientist, student, industry professional, artist, photographer or simply someone with a creative eye, this is a unique opportunity to explore and showcase biofilms from new perspectives.
Scientists and industry professionals can present their research, innovations and real-world applications in imaginative ways, while members of the public, budding artists and photographers can discover biofilms in everyday and unexpected environments.
Monetary prizes will be awarded to first (£200), second (£100) and third (£50) place in both the Photography and Art categories. The Special Theme: Industry category will have one winning entry, which will receive £200.
The competition is now open and will run until 5pm UK time on Friday 23 October 2026.
